What is Entertaiment?

Entertaiment is a broad genre of activity, often focused on amusement, wit, and social backstabbing. It can be experienced by a single individual, at home or on mobile devices; as part of a group activity, in public spaces; or through media such as movies, music, books, television and games. Entertainment is a form of art and may have a serious purpose, such as in ceremonies, celebrations, religious festivals, or satire.

The word entertain derives from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which means “to hold inside.” It also shares roots with ten, a root in Indo-European meaning to stretch, and transform. Click on a collocation to see more examples of the word.
