What is Entertaiment?

A clown at a birthday party, a Broadway show, or your friends fighting over the last potato chip – these are all forms of entertainment. The word comes from the hospitable root entretenir, meaning “to keep up or maintain.” It’s used to describe anything that affords pleasure, diversion, or amusement, usually involving a performance of some kind. The most famous example of this is the tale of Scheherazade, a professional storyteller in the Persian tradition who saved her own life by telling stories and inspiring numerous musical works, films, and games.
