The Daily News

A daily newspaper is a paper that is published every day and contains news about current events. Daily newspapers often contain political, business, and sports news. Some are national in scope, while others focus on local events. In addition to news, daily newspapers often include opinion pieces and editorials. Many are available for free, while others require a subscription.

The New York City-based daily has long been known for zesty headlines—perhaps most famously, “Ford to City: Drop Dead” in 1975, when the city was facing financial woes—and its city coverage and star columnists such as Jimmy Breslin, Pete Hamill and Liz Smith. It also has won 11 Pulitzer Prizes during its history, including this year’s award for uncovering the use of obscure laws to evict poor minorities from their homes.

Founded in 1919, the New York Daily News bills itself as “New York’s Hometown Newspaper.” Its original headquarters at 450 West 33rd Street in Manhattan was designed by renowned architect Stanford White and straddled the tracks of Pennsylvania Station. In the 20th century, it became one of America’s first tabloids and at its peak, it was the largest circulation newspaper in the United States.

Its parent company, Tronc, acquired the newspaper on Monday, paying $1 for it and assuming its operational and pension liabilities, according to The New York Times. Tronc is a newspaper publisher that includes the Tribune Co. and has a presence in the New York media market through its Chicago-based website and other properties.

In addition to the flagship Daily News, Tronc publishes several other publications, including the Los Angeles Times and the Boston Herald. It also owns the Associated Press and is a minority owner of the Miami Herald-Tribune.

Each Daily News article is accompanied by comprehension and critical thinking questions, as well as “Background” and “Resources” sections that provide additional information about the news story for students to use in their research. Students who sign up for a free StudentNewsDaily account will receive an email with the answers to the questions each day.
