Founded in 1878, the Yale Daily News is the oldest college newspaper in the United States. The newspaper is published every weekday when classes are in session, except for holidays and vacations. The newspaper features a broad range of news stories, and is particularly noted for its extensive sports coverage. Many of the paper’s student editors, writers and contributors have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public life.
In its heyday, the Chicago Daily News was one of the country’s top daily newspapers. It was also renowned for its international coverage. It is often considered to be the first tabloid newspaper.
A weekly newspaper typically has a similar format as a daily newspaper, but its focus is usually on local news within its coverage area. Most weekly newspapers also feature one or more editorial pages where readers submit letters to the editor on a particular topic. Weekly papers may also have a public-records section which includes summaries of police-incident reports, fire department calls and court dispositions (or the outcome of a criminal proceeding). The weekly newspaper may also include a list of building permits issued in its circulation area.
In addition to news, a typical weekly newspaper may include a number of lifestyle features, including restaurant reviews and arts or theater listings. It may also feature a food page, which concentrates on recipes and cooking. A weekly newspaper may also feature a page that lists upcoming community events.
Like a daily newspaper, a weekly newspaper usually has an advertising sales page where local businesses can place ads to promote their products or services. Some large, national chain stores, as well as a few larger, regional and national organizations and charities, may also advertise in the newspaper.
The Daily News also includes an opinion page, where readers can submit opinions on current events or issues affecting their communities. The newspaper’s staff of editors, writers and columnists frequently publishes opinion pieces on topics ranging from politics to celebrities to social commentary.
In addition to its regular print edition, the Daily News is available on its website and mobile app. The Daily News app allows users to download articles for offline reading, and share articles with friends through email. The Daily News app offers the same full-featured content as the print edition, but in a more convenient and portable format. The app is free to use, and Hayward Library cardholders can access it at no charge through the Digital Newsstand. The Daily News was formerly located in 220 East 42nd Street, New York City, an official city landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The Daily News moved to its current location in 1995, although the 42nd Street building still bears the name of “The News.” The building was the inspiration for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films.
