The Daily News

The Daily News is a morning tabloid newspaper in New York City. Founded in 1919, it was the first successful tabloid newspaper in the United States. The News focuses on local issues and community events, but is also known for its sensational crime and celebrity coverage and its lurid photographs. The News has a history of being politically conservative, but is now a progressive and liberal publication. It is owned by Tronc, the publishing division of Tribune Company, and is headquartered at 4 New York Plaza in Manhattan. The newspaper has an AllSides Media Bias Rating of Left, which indicates that it is biased towards liberal, progressive, or left-wing ideas and perspectives.

A longtime rival of the New York Post, the Daily News has traditionally had a large circulation. Its early appeal was derived from its sensational subject matter, including stories of political wrongdoing such as the Teapot Dome Scandal and social intrigue such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. The News was also noted for its use of photography and became an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service. The News is an ancestor of the current New York Times, and its founders were early pioneers in tabloid journalism.

Each day the Daily News covers local, national and international news. The paper is available online, in print and via its mobile app. Local features include trending local stories, voices of the community, the impact of recent national and world events on local businesses, the intersection of technology with daily life, expert predictions, and much more. The Daily News has a staff of award-winning journalists and columnists.

In addition to its traditional news and opinion sections, the Daily News features extensive fashion and style coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics and sports. The paper also provides a full range of investigative and investigative reporting, as well as breaking news alerts.

Each Daily News article includes comprehension and critical thinking questions that help students engage with the story. “Background” and “Resources” (including video clips, maps and links) are provided below the questions to help students gain a deeper understanding of the news. The Daily News also offers a weekly news quiz that helps students keep up with what’s happening around them.
