News about Daily News
The New York Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 in New York City, the first daily printed in the United States in the tabloid format. It was once one of the most widely read newspapers in the country, with a peak circulation of more than 2.4 million copies per day during its heyday in the 1940s. The Daily News has been credited with popularizing the term “tabloid.”
Like many other popular dailies of the time, it sought to appeal to a voyeuristic sensibility that was growing in America, drawing readers with sensational stories of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and comics and entertainment features. It was also an early user of AP wirephotography, developing a large staff of photographers. Its art department created a distinctive, art deco style that was to characterize its design for much of the 20th century.
As the paper’s popularity grew, it was able to attract top writers. Its editorial page became a forum for political debate, and its news editors were highly influential in promoting public awareness of issues such as child labor laws and prohibition of polygamy. The paper was also known for its social intrigue coverage, including the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to the latter’s abdication.
By the 1930s, the Daily News was among the top five daily newspapers in the country, and its owner, John S. Knight, became one of the most powerful men in publishing. However, circulation declined with the rise of competing afternoon papers, and the Daily News folded in 1978.
In addition to its print publication, the Daily News has produced several television and radio shows, and owned and operated the New York City cable station WPIX. It maintains local bureaus in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens and shares offices within One Police Plaza with the New York Post and the New York Times. The News also has an extensive presence in the digital world, with websites and mobile apps for both smartphones and tablets.
